Special Education Glossary of Terms
GLOSSARY OF TERMS The world of Special Education is full of acronyms that can be confusing. Here is a list of the most commonly used terms.
Study TipsSTUDY TIPS
1. PICTURES - Draw simple, colourful sketches that will help you remember a term or idea. 2. COLOUR - Use markers and pencil crayons when you create your pictures and notes. Your brain remembers things better in colour! 3. MIND MAPS - Create a mind map or web that shows how parts are related to each other. Use colour and pictures. Trace the pictures and talk out loud as you review the material over and over and over again! 4. MEMORY TRICKS - Make up rhymes, sentences, and/or songs to help you remember information. E.g. Great Lakes: H - Huron O - Ontario M - Michigan E - Erie S - Superior E.g. Never Eat Shredded Wheat (North, South, East, West)
5. BREAK IT DOWN - Break the material down into smaller sections and study a different section each night. After you study the new section, go back and study the material you have already learned. 6. ACT IT OUT - Pretend to redo the Science experiment, act out a conversation between famous historical characters... Talk with your hands! 7. CIRCUIT TRAINING - Go over the material again and again, just like you would repeat exercises on a fitness circuit.
CHOOSE THE STRATEGIES THAT WORK BEST FOR YOU! Are you a VISUAL learner? You remember what you SEE. Are you an AUDITORY learner? You remember what you HEAR. Are you a KINESTHETIC learner? You remember what you DO.
