Homework
Please remember to complete your agenda homework every week!
Agenda Homework
JK Students: print the upper and lower case letter of the week on the dotted lines on the left hand page of the agenda.
SK Students: practice your popcorn words in Words of the Week section and write a sentence using these words on the left hand page.
Please remember to help your child 'sound out' the other words in the sentence.
Look on our webpage under "Popcorn words and letter fun" for more ideas. Home Reading/Bulldog Reading Program We encourage the students to take a new 'little levelled book' home each day. They must return a book in order to choose a new one. Parents are asked to record all books read to and by their children daily and then return the Bulldog Reading Log for a special prize.

Letter fun & Popcorn Words
Learning Letter and Sounds Junior Kindergarten students are expected to learn all upper and lower case letters and their sounds by the end of JK. Here are some fun ways to learn those letters..... * invest in magnetic letters for the fridge. Make words and names of family members when you are making lunches dinners etc. * mix up the letters of the alphabet and go on a letter hunt * make letters out of playdough. * make the upper and lower case letter and then match them up * try creating a story about the alphabet letters. Make it as silly or serious as you'd like! * have books about the alphabet in your homes (Alphabet mystery and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom are class favourites) * show your child the correct way to form letters and then have your child try it in shaving cream, sand, pudding. fingerpaint, mud or any other creative "goo" your child can think of. * print letters with paintbrushes, markers, crayons and sidewalk chalk. * use magazines and newspapers to find letters. Use a highlighter or cut them out and make a collage. * point out letters in books when you are reading with your child. * point out letters in environmental print i.e. look for letters when in* play I spy with my little eye something that begins with a (sound or name of the letter). * practise printing the alphabet using lower case letters only.
Popcorn Words Senior kindergarten students are expected to learn some basic sight words. We call these words our "popcorn words" because they need to "pop" into our heads so we do not need to sound them out. This helps to develop reading fluency. Each week we will teach 2-3 new "popcorn words". These are the words we hope all children will master by the end of SK.
Here is a list of our Popcorn Words. a, the, I, is, it, my, to, up, like, but, and, me, am, I'm, on, in, go, can, for, come, see, little, big, have, this, he, she, do,look, at, will, be, has, had, we, are, with, here, was, no, yes, you, said, what, where, when , why, that, they, his, her, of,went, down, by, saw
Please check your child's calendar each week for the words to practice. Remember to review them often. Read them, write them, find them in books! Reading these words quickly without needing to sound them out will help your child to become a fluent reader.
Here is a link you can go to and print the popcorn words in popcorn shapes to use at home. Scroll down until you see POPCORN WORDS.
These Youtube games are fun ways to review Popcorn words (not all words match the list above) When on the Youtube page, check the side bar for more links that are similar Healthy Snacks
Please send healthy snacks with your child each day. Healthy snacks help to fuel our brains and bodies. Some examples of healthy snacks are; fruits, vegetables, yogurt, apple sauce, cheese and crackers, granola bars, cereal bars, muffins, mini bagels, dry cereal, raisins and pretzels. Chocolate and candy are not appropriate snacks for school. Fruit Roll Ups, Fruit By the Foot and Fruit gummies are candy not fruit! We give the children about 10 minutes for snack time so please ensure the snack can be eaten fairly quickly.
Outdoor Clothing
Spring has sprung! Please send your child with splash pants and extra socks each day as our yard tends to be quite wet. Please continue to support your child's independence by enouraging him/her to get dressed and undressed all by themselves.
PLEASE NOTE: We cannot leave our classroom at dismissal time until all students are fully dressed and ready to go. Unfortunately, sometimes this means that parents may have to wait outside the gate a little longer than they would like. We do try our best to be ready on time and we do appreciate your patience.
