DictéeWeek of May 14 - 18 un mois
une balançoire
boire
une voiture
un oiseau
une baignoire
un poisson
une étoile
un mouchoir
une boîte
The dictée words will be posted on my webpage every Monday. While I check the words that the students copy into their agendas before they go home, it is always a good idea to verify the spelling online. I am only human and it is possible that I will miss something from time to time! Thank you for your cooperation.
There are many ways that you can help your child to study for dictée. Find the one that works for you and stick with it! Here are some suggestions to help to keep things interesting: - traditional: mom or dad reads the word aloud, child writes it on a piece of paper - split it up: focus on 3 words a night so that it is less overwhelming - have your child spell the words with play dough - pour some sugar on the counter, have your child lick their finger and write the word in the sugar - have your child write sentences with the dictée word - use scrabble tiles to practise spelling the words
Use your imagination and have fun with it!
Home ReadingWe have now begun our home reading program. Every Monday, your child will be sent home with a new book that is appropriate for their reading level. They are to keep this book until the following Monday when it will be exchanged in class. Your child will read the same book for 5 days in order to become an expert. The grade 2 team asks that you take 10 minutes a night to have your child read the book and to help them to fill in the reading log in their black duotang. In order to be eco-friendly, the log is set up so that 5 weeks worth of reading will be recorded on each side of the sheet. You will only need to fill in one row a week. On the log, you and your child will need to fill out: - the date (this is for the whole week. ex Oct 3 - Oct 7) - the title of the book - the level of the book (generally found on the inside cover, either the front or the back) - difficulty ( sad face = difficult, neutral face = just right, happy face = too easy) - recommendation (rate the book out of 5 stars) - 3 new words they come across in the book - parental initials (one for every day of the week. Please only sign if your child has read for the full 10 minutes) * There are many activities that you as parents can do with your child before and after their nightly reading: - do a picture walk before reading and make predicitions about what will happen in the story - have your child do a retell orally after reading - talk about the characters, the setting, the problem and the solution - ask your child what they think would happen in a follow-up story - talk about why they did or did not like the book - discuss different strategies that they can use when they do not know a word (ex. breaking the word into syllables, looking for smaller words within the word, use the picture for hints...)
Etoile de la semaine
The "ETOILE DE LA SEMAINE" or Star of the Week program is one that encourages the students to share things about themselves with their peers in order to help them to get to know one another and discover things that they have in common. It also gives them the opportunity to practice their oral French! Every week, we will have an ETOILE who will be responsible for bringing in artifacts to share which represent them. They will be asked to bring their artifacts on the Monday of their week in order to decorate the cork board and they will share their artifacts with the class on Friday (at this time we would pass around articles that cannot be attached to the corkboard). You will receive a notice that it is your child's turn to be the ETOILE in the agenda the Monday prior to your child's week. Topics of interest could include (but are not limited to):
Thank you for your support with this program!
Who is Nobody? This year our class will be undertaking the Who is Nobody project. Nobody is a blue doll without a name, face, gender, race, interests or friends. It is our job to help Nobody become Somebody by doing kind things around our school, homes and community. Every student will have the opportunity to take Nobody home with them for one week. During that time, they must come up with something that they can do to help other people, animals or the environment. The purpose of this activity is to help Nobody (and the students) to build character by focusing on important character traits : courage, integrity, fairness, perseverance, optimism, honesty, initivative, respect, responsibility and empathy. Step 1 - Choose an act of kindness It is up to you and your child to choose something that suits your interests and abilities! Projects can include taking care of the family pet, shoveling snow for an elderly neighbour, raising awareness about endangered animals, helping at a soup kitchen, recycling, donating old clothes or toys to a shelter, collecting pop tabs to help make wheelchairs, baking cookies for a sick friend, etc... The possibilities are endless!!! Step 2 - Complete the good deed with Nobody Document activity by taking a picture of Nobody and your child while completing the activity (if you wish). Step 3 - Share your good deed The class will be putting together a scrapbook to share all of the wonderful things we have been doing. Please have your child write 1-2 sentences in French about what they did to help Nobody become Somebody. Together, in English, please write a more detailed description of what your child did, why they did it and how it made them feel. Your child may also wish to draw a picture to accompany their writing, to be pasted in our scrapbook. Step 4 - Attach a memento Thoughout the year, Nobody will be collecting memories and experiences to help him to grow as a person. Please attach a small trinket to represent your child's good deed. For example: If you donate toys at Christmas, attach a McDonald's toy to Nobody. If you plant a tree, attach a small plastic shovel to Nobody's hand. If you donate money to a local charity, attach pennies to Nobody's face as eyes. Step 5 - Return Nobody with your child on Monday Nobody will be sent home on a Monday. To ensure that every student has a full week, is is essential that you return Nobody with your child when they come so school on Monday morning. Thank you for your support with this project. The class and I are very excited about it! I will send the scrapbook home with every child once the project is complete. I cannot wait to see what kind of fantastic things the students will get involved in. http://www.whoisnobody.com/examples.html Take home order - TBA
