News and Notes
Updated May 14th... At home, students should be practising basic addition and subtraction facts daily (up to 18). They should also practise adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping. This can be a difficult concept for many, therefore regular review is very important! Please see the 'website links' tab for some great sites to help practise! Thank you for helping your child at home. Each student has now had the opportunity to complete their "Who is Nobody?" project. Soon, I will start sending home the scrapbook the students have put together so that you can see the wonderful things the students have done this year to help others, animals, and the environment. "Nobody" has become "Somebody!" Bravo, mes amis! :) In April, the students wrote accrostic poems about the month of April. Some of these poems are featured in the May edition of the school newsletter! Please check it out on the school website! We have now begun "Montre et raconte" (Show and Share). Please see the 'Montre et raconte' tab for the schedule. Please remind your child to return their Dictée cahier (signed and corrected) and their Home Reading cahier every Monday. Please see our "Who is Nobody?" tab for important information on an exciting project!
Étoile de la semaine (Star of the Week): Each child will have the opportunity to be "Étoile de la semaine". When your child is selected, they will bring home a booklet to complete at home. The booklet is then due on the Friday at the end of their week, as they will present it to the class on the Friday. However, it does not have to remain in booklet form. Students can choose to present it on bristol board, or as a scrapbook, or in any other creative way they choose! During their week, the "étoile" is also encouraged to bring in objects/pictures/toys, etc., to show the class each day, or even share their talents with us (playing an instrument, a magic trick, etc.)!
Please see the curriculum tab for information about what we are studying and for suggestions to help your child review and practise at home.
Our Home Reading Program Your child will bring home a book at or near their reading level, as well as a duotang. In the duotang you will find a letter that explains the program and a tracking sheet. Students are responsible for reading their book each night throughout the week and returning it to school with the duotang (signed by a parent) every Monday. **Your signature indicates that you have seen/heard them reading the book each night for at least 10 minutes.** In the event of a holiday Monday, please send the book back on the Tuesday.
Please be sure to check and sign your child's agenda each night so that I know you have seen it. Thanks! Our class has Phys. Ed. on days 1, 2, and 5. Students should wear running shoes on those days as they will often go outside for Phys. Ed. when the weather permits.
Words of the WeekStudents copy the Dictée words into their Agenda on Mondays and the Dictée will be held on Fridays. Each week the words focus on a different sound, in conjunction with our phonics program. *The words will be given in a different order for the dictée!*
1) un mois 2) une balançoire 3) boire 4) une voiture 5) un oiseau 6) une baignoire 7) un poisson 8) une étoile 9) un mouchoir 10) une boîte

Who is Nobody?
This year our class will be undertaking the Who is Nobody project. Nobody (or "Personne") is a blue doll without a name, face, gender, race, interests or friends. It is our job to help Nobody become Somebody by doing kind things around our school, homes and community. Every student will have the opportunity to take Nobody home with them for one week. During that time, they must come up with something that they can do to help other people, animals or the environment. The purpose of this activity is to help Nobody (and the students) build character by focusing on important character traits: courage, integrity, fairness, perseverance, optimism, honesty, initiative, respect, responsibility and empathy. Step 1 - Choose an act of kindness It is up to you and your child to choose something that suits their interests and abilities! Projects can include taking care of the family pet, shoveling snow for an elderly neighbour, raising awareness about endangered animals, helping at a soup kitchen, recycling, donating old clothes or toys to a shelter, collecting pop tabs to help make wheelchairs, baking cookies for a sick friend, etc... The possibilities are endless!!! Step 2 - Complete the good deed with Nobody Document the activity by taking a picture of Nobody and your child while completing the activity. Step 3 - Share your good deed The class will be putting together a scrapbook to share all of the wonderful things we have been doing. Please have your child write a few sentences in French about what they did to help Nobody become Somebody, why they did it and how it made them feel. Your child may also wish to draw a picture to accompany their writing, to be pasted in our scrapbook. Step 4 - Attach a memento Throughout the year, Nobody will be collecting memories and experiences to help him grow as a person. Please attach a small trinket to represent your child's good deed. For example: If you donate toys at Christmas, you could attach a small toy to Nobody. If you plant a tree, you could attach a small plastic shovel to Nobody's hand. If you donate money to a local charity, you could attach pennies to Nobody's face as eyes. Step 5 - Return Nobody with your child on Monday Nobody will be sent home on a Monday. To ensure that every student has a full week, it is essential that you return Nobody with your child when they come to school on Monday morning. Thank you for your support with this project. The class and I are very excited about it! I cannot wait to see what kind of fantastic things the students will get involved in. http://www.whoisnobody.com/examples.html Who is Nobody weekly schedule: Nov. 28 - Dec 5: Alex Dec 5 - Dec 12: Ava Dec 12 - Dec 19: Brayden Jan 9 - Jan 16: Alyssa Jan 16 - Jan 23: Jordan Jan 23 - Jan 30: Samantha Jan 30 - Feb 6: Matthew Feb 6 - Feb 13: Noelle Feb 13 - Feb 21: Carson Feb 21 - Feb 27: Tristan Feb 27 - Mar 5: Lily Mar 19 - Mar 26: Max Mar 26 - Apr 2: Sydney Apr 16 - Apr 23: Eve Apr 23 - Apr 30: Hannah Apr 30 - May 7: Alvan May 7 - May 14: Tanaka
