Welcome to Mme Mallias' homepage!
BOOKMARK ME PLEASE!
Welcome to Grade Two / Three French Immersion.
The students will be using an agenda this year, where they can record their nightly homework. All homework written in the agenda is due the next day (unless otherwise indicated). Parents are asked to initial every day (including Friday) when homework is completed. Please initial the agenda after you have checked the work and it is completed. We encourage you to write your comments and notes to the teacher in this book. You can also place your notes in the plastic envelope at the beginning of the book. It will be the student's responsibility to give these notes to the teacher. Please ensure when you send money to send exact change and send it in a envelope/ ziplock with your child's name. Updated 1 March It's getting closer to March Break! Wow, the time has flown by very fast! The next week and a half will go quickly I'm sure, as we still have a lot to accomplish. Ask you children about the new "Brain Dance" we are doing in class! It's lots of fun and prepares the kids to learn as well. *Please remember to check the lists for your child's turn as star of the week as well as with Nobody. The children are having lots of fun with these projects! ***It’s always fun playing in the snow but can be very uncomfortable during class time with wet clothing! Please make sure your child has an extra pair of the following items in their backpack to help them stay warm as well as be comfortable throughout the day:
Thanks!!
Xtra MathWe are using a web-based program called XtraMath to increase speed and accuracy in arithmetic. Your child is invited to spend a few minutes each day practicing math on the computer. I try to get the kids on it at school as much as possible as well. So far they are (mostly) really enjoying it, especially the "race the teacher" part! Each child was given a sheet of instructions, including a login code, to enable them to access the program from home. https://www.xtramath.org/home/ Have fun! tumblebooks readingTumbleBooks is a wonderful reading website for kids! It has a great number of books, in English and French, that are read TO the children, so they can hear and see the words. The site does require a subscription which our school currently doesn't have. However, the Ajax Library does, and it is free for all to use! Here's how: 1. Go to the Town of Ajax Library website Web Resources: http://www.townofajax.com/Page144.aspx 2. Scroll down to "Children's Sites". The first link is for TumbleBookLibrary. Click on it. 3. When the link opens, there is a box in the upper right corner to choose a language. Choose French. 4. Click on "Livres pour enfants". 5. Choose a book from the list and have fun listening and reading along!!
Grade 2Language: Dictée words will be sent home in the agenda on the Monday, and the Dictée will take place on the Friday of each week. The purpose of the Dictée is to help students spell frequently used words. Each week will focus on words that share a specific sound or theme. I was very impressed with the results of the dictée last week, as it was a review of all the words we have done so far this year! Félicitations!! Here are this week's words:
Thank you for your support with the dictée. If you could sign last week's dictée before sending it back to school that would be great. This way I will know that you have seen it. Math:We are have finished shapes and are now focusing on addition, subtraction and money. Please encourage your child to practice these at home as well! Social Studies: - We have begun mapping. Please encourage your child to notice signs and directions as you go places. Science: - We are currently learning about movement and different types of tools that aid movement such as levers and wedges. Ask your child to identify sinple machines in and around your house! LIBRARY - Students will be able to exchange their books when they are finished with them. They will be given a library pass and time to do so! Our Home Reading Program: Your child will bring home a book at or near their reading level, as well as a duotang. In the duotang you will find a letter that explains the program and a tracking sheet. Students are responsible for reading their book each night throughout the week and returning it to school with the duotang (signed by a parent) every Monday. **Your signature indicates that you have seen/heard them reading the book each night for at least 10 minutes.** In the event of a holiday Monday, please send the book back on the Tuesday. Grade 3Please check this section often to follow what we are working on in class.Students will receive a homework duo-tang on a WEEKLY basis. Homework will run on a Friday to Friday basis. Students will need to bring their duo-tang to school every Friday. We will take up the homework together and then students will receive the new homework to take home for the week. It will include a dictée list (spelling words and/or sentences), verb of the week, reading log, and various french and/or math work similar to what is being covered in class. Please have your child practice the dictée each week. Dictée will be on Friday mornings. Please also have them practice the verb of the week as it is part of the Grade 3 curriculum and will appear on the dictée. MATH - We are finished shapes now, and have begun our addition, subtraction and money unit.
Students are learning how to add and subtract money amounts, different ways to make various amounts, and problem solve. At home, you can practice adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers, as well as figure out how much money you will get back as change when you're out shopping!!
Here is a list of web-sites to help support the above concepts: http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mfam3/flash/index.html http://www.netrover.com/~kingskid/MadMath/mmm.htm http://www.smartygames.com/igre/math/learnMoney.html
Try some of these activites at home!!!! add_and_subtract_family_cards.pdf
SCIENCE -We have begun our unit on forces. Ask your child to show you the many types of forces we have already learned about! LANGUAGE - We have finished our procedural writing unit, and have moved on to Descriptive Writing. We are learning how to add adjectives to our sentences to help us include more details. We are also reviewing how to identify nouns, adjectives and verbs to ensure they are gramatically correct. Features of Descriptive writing . Does it use adjectives to make the descriptions better? (these could describe size, colour, texture etc.) Does it have capital letters at the start of each sentence and punctuation at the end? Does it use different openings to sentences? NOT; and then, and then, then we , then she, then he etc. Does it have a clear beginning, middle and end? descriptive_writing_checklist.pdf
LIBRARY - Students will be able to exchange their books when they are finished with them. They will be given a library pass and time to do so!
Étoile de la semaine
The "ÉTOILE DE LA SEMAINE" or Star of the Week program is one that encourages the students to share things about themselves with their peers in order to help them to get to know one another and discover things that they have in common. It also gives them the opportunity to practice their oral French! Every week, we will have an ÉTOILE who will be responsible for bringing in artifacts to share which represent them. They will be asked to bring their artifacts on the Monday of their week in order to decorate the board and they will share their artifacts with the class on Friday (at this time we would pass around articles that cannot be attached to the board). You will receive a notice that it is your child's turn to be the ÉTOILE in the agenda the Friday prior to your child's week. Topics of interest could include (but are not limited to):
Thank you for your support with this program!
Who is nobody? This year our class will be undertaking the Who is Nobody project. Nobody is a blue doll without a name, face, gender, race, interests or friends. It is our job to help Nobody become Somebody by doing kind things around our school, homes and community. Every student will have the opportunity to take Nobody home with them for one week. During that time, they must come up with something that they can do to help other people, animals or the environment. The purpose of this activity is to help Nobody (and the students) to build character by focusing on important character traits : courage, integrity, fairness, perseverance, optimism, honesty, initiative, respect, responsibility and empathy. Step 1 - Choose an act of kindness It is up to you and your child to choose something that suits your interests and abilities! Projects can include taking care of the family pet, shoveling snow for an elderly neighbour, raising awareness about endangered animals, helping at a soup kitchen, recycling, donating old clothes or toys to a shelter, collecting pop tabs to help make wheelchairs, baking cookies for a sick friend, etc... The possibilities are endless!!! Step 2 - Complete the good deed with Nobody Document activity by taking a picture of Nobody and your child while completing the activity (if you wish). Step 3 - Share your good deed The class will be putting together a scrapbook to share all of the wonderful things we have been doing. Please have your child write 1-2 sentences in French about what they did to help Nobody become Somebody. Together, in English, please write a more detailed description of what your child did, why they did it and how it made them feel. Your child may also wish to draw a picture to accompany their writing, to be pasted in our scrapbook. Step 4 - Attach a memento Thoughout the year, Nobody will be collecting memories and experiences to help him to grow as a person. Please attach a small trinket to represent your child's good deed. For example: If you donate toys at Christmas, attach a McDonald's toy to Nobody. If you plant a tree, attach a small plastic shovel to Nobody's hand. If you donate money to a local charity, attach pennies to Nobody's face as eyes. Step 5 - Return Nobody with your child on Monday Nobody will be sent home on a Monday. To ensure that every student has a full week, it is essential that you return Nobody with your child when they come so school on Monday morning. Thank you for your support with this project. The class and I are very excited about it! I will send the scrapbook home with every child once the project is complete. I cannot wait to see what kind of fantastic things the students will get involved in. http://www.whoisnobody.com/examples.html Take home order

FAQQ: Help! I don't know how to help my child study for the dictee! A: One of the main goals in writing the dictee is to get the children familiar with hearing the sounds in French, and to know how to spell frequently used words. Each dictee is recorded on Mme Witzel's webpage, so you can listen to the proper pronunciation there. You can help your child to practise writing by spelling out the words with playdough, they can roll the playdough into long "snakes"and then shape the letters to spell the words. You can also put flour, or sugar, or jello powder on the kitchen counter or on a cookie sheet and have your child lick their finger, then spell the words in the flour/ sugar/ jello powder... sand or sparkles is another good option! You can make a book and draw pictures to go with the sounds or the words. Practise writing with markers, or paint, or pens..... Write the words, and then cut them up, and your child can have a race to see how long it takes them to put the words together. Do the dictee along with your child, and correct any mistakes together!
