Welcome to Mrs. Vandenbrink's Grade 6 Webpage

Welcome

Welcome to Mrs. Vandenbrink's Grade Six Class!ani_superteacher

We are located in portable 2.

Our Surivial/Emergency Kits are due on Thursday. Each student has been given a checklist of what they are expected to complete for this project. The written portion will be done at school. The actual kit is to be made at home.

Brooani_globeklin Village is a certified GOLD Eco School! Our class was the junior divisional winners for the month of March! We are doing a fantastic job of reducing our waste and conserving energy. Well done, grade six!

Need help? All students need to do is ask! I find that the majority of students want to be successful, so it is always a good idea to ask for help before a test, quiz or assignment due date.

This week homework help is: WEDNESDAY at lunch recess!

ani_school_suppliesMany of the students are in need of new pencils, erasers, pencil crayons, scissors.

We also always welcome donations of tissues! A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who has recently donated: Diego, Jackson, Georgia M., Kristen, Erica (x2!), Mackenzie, Stefanie (x2!) and Gemma!

Be sure to check and sign your child's agenda every day! Taking the time to check over their homework to ensure that it has been completed with care (as opposed to rushed) would be appreciated!

**I'm currently experiencing some technical difficulties with this page! The updates are there, you might just have to scroll WAY down*

"What'd you do in school today?"

"Oh, nothing....."

Sound familar? I can assure you, we will never be doing nothing! Stay tuned to this page for updates on our current units of study.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

 - Dr. Seuss

- We are well into our new literacy unit 'When Disaster Strikes'. The students are learning about natural disasters by reading through various non-fiction texts. Within book clubs, they read newspaper articles about how to be prepared in certain disasters, rescue efforts and fundraising efforts used to help victims. We are now moving towards the end of our unit- building our own disaster kits.

Throughout this unit, our class read aloud was, Safe as Houses. This is a historical narrative about children who were stranded on their roof top during Hurricane Hazel.

- We will be taking some time to polish our writing skills by reviewing the parts of speech and correct use of punctuation.

- April is poetry month! We will be taking some time to review poetic devices and write some of our own poems. So far we have learned about the different poetic devices and have studied the following poetic forms:

cinquain, clerihew, diamante, concrete, found and limerick.

We have moved on to probability!

All students should be able to:

-use words to describe the likelihood of various events

- use a number line to plot the outcome of events (0- impossible to 1- certain)

- use fractions to describe the theoretical and experimental probability of events

- draw tree diagrams to show all possible outcomes for a series of events

**many students do not know their times tables and are therefore having a very difficult time. Many students would benefit from home review of their times tables**

We are well into our flight unit. The students have been assigned a flight project where they have to create a paper airplane that can either : fly for a great distance, hit a specific target and/or do tricks. The students will have some time in class to experiment with different designs. They are encouraged to do some at-home research. All students must be able to create their airplane independently and explain the scientific reasons for the way it flies (Bernoulli's Principal, four forces of flight). The assignment is due on Monday May 7th.

Homework

Homework

ani-dog

I do not assign a lot of homework. The majority of work will be completed during class time, where I can watch the students work, providing them with feedback and assistance along the way. Anything that does go home is either for additional practice, or is work that did not get completed during class time. Please be sure to check your child's agenda daily to ensure they are completing their homework on time.
