Monthly Newsletter

May 2012

May is going to be a very busy month in room 101!  We will be doing a lot of Math this month to make sure the 6s are ready for EQAO.  Math duotangs should come home nightly to finish up work assigned in class and for review.  Students are encouraged to seek help for Math on a daily basis.  I am available for extra help in Math most morning recesses as well as Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at lunch.  We will be working through EQAO questions in class since it is helpful for students to hear how their peers solve problems.  As you already know, there is more than one way to work through a Math problem and the more strategies the students know, the better.  EQAO questions will also be sent home nightly and reviewed in class the following day.

Thank you,

Mme Jessup

Math ~ We are currently working on Transformational Geometry.

French reading ~ Up to this point we have focused on four reading strategies (visualizing, predicting, making connections and making inferences).  We are currently working on questionning.

Reading:

Shared and Modelled Read Aloud: We have started the next novel study.  It is called, THE MISFITS by James Howe.  It is a great read that follows a group of students who have been bullied and decide to take a stand against bullying and to celebrate their differences!

Guided Reading :  Students will be reading in groups that will focus on their reading strengths and help them with reading comprehension strategies. These strategies are: Inferring, Connecting, Predicting, Questionning, Synthesizing, Previewing.

Independent Reading:  During our Guided Reading Groups, other groups will be expected to read independently books of their choosing.  We have a varied library in class and have access to the many books in our School Library. Independent reading also occurs when a student has finished their work for the day early.

Writing:  We have started to write persuasive essays as well as continuing the better answer model of writing.

Word Study: We have differentiated word study groups (different levels based on their strengths and needs.)  Word study is more for learning about how words connect, relate and the meanings behind word usage in the English Language.

French Language

Guided Reading : Our guided reading groups have begun!  I will be reading with a couple of groups per week.  Each group will be focussing on different reading strategies at different times, depending on their needs.  So far, we have covered visualizing, predicting and making connections.  Our next focus will be making inferences.  Please feel free to review these strategies at home!

Class Novel study : We are currently reading 'La fievre du trésor', written by Andy Griffiths, as a class.  Up to this point, we have worked on and implemented two reading strategies : visualisation and making predictions.  We are now focusing on making meaningful connections.

Writing : We have been focussing on answering questions using the 'Better Answers' format, which contains five elements.

1 and 2) The first sentence is a response to the question in full sentence format, but rather than giving all of the information in this sentence, finishes with a gist statement.  ex.  Question : What did you do after school last night?  Instead of giving a specific answer such as "Last night after school, I came home and received a phone call from my Grandma.", students would be less specific in order to entice the reader to continue reading.  "Last night after school, something out of the ordinary happened".

3)  Proof from the text supporting their claim made in the first sentence.

4) Relate this situation to self (make a connection).

5) Concluding sentence.

We are currently working on writing recounts.
