ani_sun

We will be finishing the module about Engery in our lives in May.

The topics that we have studied include the sources of energy and types of energy produced. In particular, we looked at the sun as the main source of energy.

After learning about food as a source of energy for people, we learned about different ways to conserve energy at home and at school.

Our final Science module is Daily & Seasonal changes.

We will learn about changes in the sun during the day and different seasons. We will also learn about the differences in temperature, light and precipitation from season to season.

We will study these topics until the end of June.

Mme McDonald - Science is scheduled on Days 2, 3, and 5.

Mme McClellan - Science is scheduled on Days 1, 3, and 4.

Students will receive two and a half hours of Science and Technology instruction per 5 Day cycle.

Art ~ Mme Boivin

colour_mixing We have learned how to mix primary colours to make secondary colours.

We learned about the artist Claude Monet. Students made waterlilly paintings similar to the Nympheas paintings by Monet. We mixed blue and yellow to create green tones in the painting.

We have begun to learn about Claude Matisse. Students learned some of the details of his life. Then we used Matisse's Escargot as a model for our Mother's Day cards.

During the next couple of weeks, we will make paper cut outs based on Matisse's Icarus (Jazz) work of art.

Art class is scheduled on Day 3 for one hour.

Please send in an old oversized t-shirt to wear during Art class.  Things can get messy when you're having fun!

Social Studies ~ Mme Mitchell

world-continent

We have learned about the seven continents and that they are made up of countries. Students have also learned about the four oceans and have identified these on a map.

Students have also identified Canada, Ontario and Brooklin on a map of North America. In addition, we have learned about main features of the Earth including the poles, equator and hemispheres.

We have begun our Suitcase Project! We will work on this project until the end of the year.

Students have been assigned a country to research. Their work will be collected on their own 'suitcase' which they can  take home in June. In groups, students will learn important facts about the country such as the capital and the location of the country on the world map. They will also discover interesting information such as food, traditional dress, language and climate.

Social Studies is scheduled on Days 1 and 5.  Students will receive two hours of Social Studies instruction per 5 Day cycle.

Soils In The Environment

intro_picture

We have just started our next unit about Soils.  In our first lesson we brain stormed about different places we can find soil (e.g., in our garden & at the beach).  We also discussed things that live in soil (e.g., worms & snails).
soil_and_magnifying_glass
Soil Detectives - Students will be examining a soil sample from the school garden with a magnifying glass and will record their observations.  What did they find in the soil (e.g., rocks, insects)?  What does it smell like?  What does it feel like?
different_soils
Students will also be examining several soil samples to see how soil from different locations can have different compositions (e.g., soil from a garden and sand from the park).
We have made a worm habitat in class putting several worms in a container of soil & rocks. Students predicted what the habitat would look like after a week. We then made our observations so that students could analyze the accuracy of their predictions.
soil_is What is soil made of?  Students will answer this question based on their observations of different soil samples.

Science is scheduled on Days 1, 2, 4, and 5.

Students will receive two and a half hours of Science and Technology instruction per 5 Day cycle.
