Future Plans for Brooklin Schoolsnewschool

Recently, the BVSCC consulted the Board of Trustees on a variety of topics relevant to the parents of BVPS.  Here are some highlights.

Q: What are the preliminary plans and thoughts for the new school to be located on Carnwith next to St. Bridget’s?
A: Following Board Regulation #3313, public consultation will begin for the Unnamed Vipond PS in the fall of  2012.  Staffs have had preliminary discussions.  There is consideration for a dual track school

Q: Will there be a single stream (FI) school in Brooklin, only one double stream FI/English school or will there be more double stream schools introduced?
A: With the boundary process for Unnamed Vipond PS, the French Immersion program at Brooklin Village will be reviewed.  The public consultation process will begin fall 2012.

Q:
Are there any plans for a Brooklin High school?
A: [...]Brooklin does not have sustainable yield levels and optimal programming levels to commence with the construction of a standard size (1200 pupil place) secondary school.  There are currently (Oct 2011) 655 students being bussed to Donald A Wilson SS [...]

Resources for Health and Wellness
health

Early detection is key.

Brooklin Village PS embarked on an initiative to help support students experiencing mental, emotional or behavioral health issues in 2010.   The DDSB provided training by psychometrists to four teachers in our school and supplied us with a Mental Health Toolkit. The toolkit consists of: DVD documentaries that discuss anxiety, depression, and the stigma associated with mental illness; resource books that include strategies for teachers to learn how to better accommodate a child’s needs in the classroom and handbooks for parents that provide useful ideas on coping and assisting their children’s mood, behaviour or thinking difficulties; and story books to help bring hope to children who experience these issues and education to their fellow students.

A representative from the SCC met with Jennifer Collat in the SERT office who provided some insight into the help that is currently available at BVPS.  The good news is that there are a multitude of resources for parents and kids to utilize.   The SERT office will work with you,
the parent, to find the appropriate resource whether that’s a support group, counselor, or other professional.  Some BVPS families are already benefitting from this assistance.

We asked about whether the problem of bullying could also improve with assistance from this mental health initiative.  Although the school administration would handle each incident with the appropriate steps, with regards to mental health, this may be referred to an outside source that specializes in this type of behaviour.  Children who have been victimized could gain help with the tools available in our school.  Many thanks to Jennifer Collat for her time with the SCC and most of all, to her care and concern for our children.

For additional information pertaining to mental health issues, parents can contact  Jennifer Collat or Jacqueline Wray at the school.
